Piano Playing in the UK Ӣ

The pianist Lang Lang
Lang Lang at the Royal Albert Hall in London

The piano is a Western instrument. But it is popular in China. So I want to know whether it is important in Britain and do many people in Britain especially children study the piano?

Penelope, Xi'an

Chinese pianist Lang Lang is world famous after playing at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But while piano playing in China goes from strength to strength, how popular is the instrument in the UK?

In this programme, Finn Aberdein and Yang Li discuss the popularity of different musical instruments in Britain, and find that there is an interesting gender split.

Also listen out for a musical treat from Lang Lang himself, plus his ideas on why classical music seems to be less popular in the West than in China.

After you have listened to the programme, try the quiz.
