Goethe University is frequently ranked as one of Germany's leading institutions of higher education. It was founded in 1914 by prominent citizens of Frankfurt. As an endowed institution the university is semi-autonomous from the government. With 39,000 students, including over 5,000 international students representing 130 nationalities, the University has a rich tradition of intellectual and cultural excellence. Numerous Nobel Prize winners in science and medicine, including Max Born, Paul Ehrlich and Max von Laue, were among the students and teachers of the University. It is home to the world-renowned Frankfurt School, the Institute for Social Research of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, and has enjoyed the teaching of philosophers such as Juergen Habermas. In a recent nationwide competition, Goethe University obtained three clusters of excellence in the field of medicine, the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences. In the Shanghai ranking Goethe University ranks among the first 100. The university has 16 faculties & a large number of degree programs.
