Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen started a billion-dollar enterprise of direct-to-video movies, a girl fashion line, and dolls. That was on top of their childhood stardom.
These two have been famous since they were nine months old.
Nearing their 18th birthday on June 13, they know numerous websites and men's
magazines are doing the countdown to the date. "Men always have a countdown
when it comes to young women," Mary-Kate smiled.
Ashley says that they have "bad hair and bad skin days like everyone else". And, they also have disagreements.
"Of course we find things to disagree about," says Mary-Kate. "We wouldn't be as close as we are if we didn't have the occasional fight."
And this is the central idea of their feature film debut, "New York Minute", in which the girls play suburb sisters on a big city adventure. The film opened in the US last weekend.
"'New York Minute' is our first feature film, which is why it was such a big step for us," explains Ashley.
These two have been famous since they were nine months old and they got a star on the Walk of Fame late last month. But they have an almost indifferent attitude about their fame, their fortune and their wholesome image. They say they don't calculate how to appeal to fans.
"We wouldn't be successful if our fans didn't like what we were doing," said Ashley.
When they turned six, Robert Thorne, their manager and the CEO of the girls' company, Dualstar Entertainment Group, made them executive producers on all their video movies.
When the girls turn 18, they will automatically become co-presidents of Dualstar's billion-dollar empire.
But that prospect is not as exciting for them as attending New York University.
"We'll get to explore things in a way we've never been able to before because we'll be adults," says Mary-Kate, who says she is planning to study culinary arts. Her sister has enrolled primarily in psychology courses, but both girls will also take acting classes.
In the movie, Ashley plays a straight-A student, with Mary-Kate as her rebellious sister.
"Yes, Mary-Kate does have more of a rebellious spirit," said Adam Cooper, one of the three writers on the film.
"You see this
in the way they dress, their makeup and fashion accessories."
