JEON Ji Hyun appears to possess everything an ideal girlfriend should have — long, silky hair, a slim figure and a sunny smile. But still the world remembers her as a “sassy girl” because of the 2001 hit romantic comedy “My Sassy Girl”.
In the film, Jeon plays a violent but lovely girl who can only express herself by physically assaulting strangers and slinging insults. The film became an instant hit across Asia.
And for girls, punching their boyfriends or forcing them into high heels became the modern and popular way to express their love.
“I do share some similarities with the girl in the film — outgoing and warm-hearted, only that. I never beat anyone,” says Jeon.
But onscreen, it’s another scene. In her new film “I’ve got you, babe” (Yeman Shijie), set to be released on June 4, the 23-year-old is up to her wacky business again. The film features Jeon as an even more violent policewoman who has just lost her sweetheart and has put all her energy into crazily chasing almost every criminal she’s met.
“Those chase and fight scenes remind me of my childhood days when I fought with boys over a toy,” Jeon said with a giggle. “And I was often the winner because my older brother always came to help me out.”
But the once boylike girl began to show talent in acting as she grew up. In 1997, Jeon first appeared in a TV commercial. Her sexy image shocked her teacher and fellow students who only knew her as a hard-working high school girl.
After appearing in several TV series and two little known films, “the sassy girl” role finally got Jeon a postion at the top of Korea’s showbiz ladder.
The only thing Jeon is worrying about is her classes at Dankook University, South Korea. “I’m trying to find any possible time to finish my homework. I’d like to be a good actress, and a good student.”
